Sightseeing Tours of Coopers Hill with Silverline Cars

This really is an ‘Only in England’ event.

Taking place annually on spring bank holiday, originally by and for the people of Brockworth. Although it is now a much more global event, with participants from around the world coming to take part.

A 9lb round Double Gloucester cheese is rolled down the hill, followed by the participants who are hoping to catch the cheese. The cheese gets a head start of one second so in reality it is a race to the bottom, where the finishing line is situated.

The prize for the winner is the cheese. You may think the competitors are brave (you can be certain that no alcohol is used to aid this bravery 🙂 )

It can also be quite dangerous for the spectators as the cheese can reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour.

This event can be traced back as far as the fifteenth century.

It may surprise you to know that there are occasionally injuries during this event. In 2005 the racing was suspended while waiting for the ambulances to return as they had all gone to local hospitals with competitors.
