Born in Portsmouth in 1806 the son of Marc Isambard Brunel

 

Brunel's first commission as a designer and constructor was the world Famous Clifton Suspension Bridge over the Avon Gorge in Bristol

Started in 1831 it was not actually completed until 1864 five years after his death. It was completed to serve as a memorial to his acheivements.

Brunel was responsible for the construction of the railway line connecting Bristol to London. Along with a number of tunnels and bridges along the way.

Brunel designed the SS Great Britain, which is now berthed in Bristol docks.

Brunel died in London after suffering a stroke on September 15th 1859.
