Burford is a picturesque Market Town on the river Windrush in the Cotswold hills in Oxfordshire. Oxford City is less than 20 miles away. The name Burford comes from the old English words Burh, meaning fortified town and Ford which means the crossing of a river.

Burford was first definitely referenced in the 1086 Doomsday book. It has remained a town for over 900 years. The original records and charters can still be seen in the main high street. In the Tolsey Museum.

Over the years the town grew as its market grew. From local sheep farmers came wool, the wool was woven in the local mills which employed weavers, tanners also produced some of the best saddles in Europe.

The local stone was used in construction of local houses which in turn kept work for local builders and stone masons.
